Osteopathy was developed by A.T. Still M.D, D.O in 1874. Today in the commonwealth, Osteopaths study for 5 years at university completing a bachelors and masters of Osteopathy. Their education covers osteopathic principles and treatment, anatomy and physiology and dissection, neurology, pathology, clinical diagnosis and management, psychology, pharmacology, biomechanics, rehabilitation and research.

In the USA a large percentage of medical students enter into the MD.DO program making them a Medical Doctor and Doctor of Osteopathy upon graduation. In Australia, an Osteopath is not a medical doctor, but specialist in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions with his/her hands and is educated in making referrals when medical management is indicated.
